IOM Organizes Information Meeting for Students

13.02.2017 | Filed under: Other, Press / News Releases

On 10 February 2017 Mission of the International Organization for Migration in the Republic of Belarus jointly with the School of Intercultural Communication of Minsk State Linguistic University organized an information meeting on migration management.

The purpose of the meeting was to inform the students of the school of Intercultural Communication about IOM’s activities in the field of migration management, the necessity in humane and orderly migration management and the effective respect for the human rights of migrants in accordance with the international law.

Thus, during the meeting the IOM representatives, Victoria Klimova, IOM Project Coordinator, and Andrei Zaitsev, IOM Project Coordinator, informed the students of the School of Intercultural Communication on the principles of safe migration, the need of migration management for the benefit of bothe society and migrants themselves and migration challenges that many countries are facing at the moment. In addition, the students got acquainted with IOM’s activities in Belarus.

Future specialists actively participated in a role-play game “Solving Migrant Crisis in Democration”. During the game students could play the role of a governmental organization representative, who manages migration, a society representative, who has a negative attitude towards migration, or to speak on behalf of migrants. As a result, the participants agreed that migration is an inevitable process which requires management and respect for human rights in order to ensure the security of population and benefit from migration processes and provide assistance to migrants based on their needs.

Minsk State Linguistic University is one of the leading institutions in international communication specialists training. In the learning process much attention is paid to the phenomena of migration, globalization and human trafficking. The information meeting on migration management gave the students an opportunity to get acquainted with IOM’s activities the official position of Mission of the International Organization for Migration in the Republic of Belarus, and, of course, learn more about the process of migration.
